It was in the year 1997 when she was seen on screen as an actress for the first time, portraying the role Cathy Gillingham in one of the episodes of Trial & Retribution. In 1998, she was featured on the short film Mild and Better, playing a minor role. Her career breakthrough came in the year 2009 when she was cast on the film Nowhere Boy by which she earned the British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actress, London Film Critics’ Circle Award for British Supporting Actress of the Year, and a number of nominations. In addition, she also became remarkable when she was cast as Fiona Gallagher on the popular TV series Shameless from 2004 to 2005.

It was in October 2006 when she got married to Scottish actor James McAvoy. They started dating in the year 2004. These days, they are happily living together with their daughter Brendan McAvoy who was born in the year 2010.
