Barack Hussein Obama II was born at Kapiʻolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital (now Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children) in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961. His mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was born in Wichita, Kansas, and was of mostly English ancestry. His father, Barack Obama, Sr., was a Luo from Nyang’oma Kogelo, Kenya. Obama is presently the president of USA, its 44th president. Obama is the first African American to hold this office and the first Hawaii resident to be a US president.
Obama is a Harvard Law School as well as Columbia University graduate. He portrayed leadership skills in the university by serving as the president of the Harvard Law Review; he also worked as a community organizer in Chicago before graduating with a law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney after his graduation and at the same time taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He has served three terms as the representative of the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004, he vied for the United States House of Representatives in 2000 but he was unsuccessful.
In an interview in 2006, he explained the miscellany of his extensive family: “It’s like a little mini-United Nations”, he said. “I’ve got relatives who look like Bernie Mac, and I’ve got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher.” Obama has a half-sister who was raised together with him (Maya Soetoro-Ng, is the daughter of his mother and her Indonesian second husband) and he has seven other half-siblings from his Kenyan father’s family – six of them living.
Obama struggled to stop smoking severely; sometimes he had to use nicotine replacement therapy in effort to avoid smoking. Michelle Obama revealed in early 2010, that he had fully stopped smoking.
