American actress, singer, and songwriter Idina Menzel was born Kim Mentzel on May 30, 1971 in Queens, New York to parents Helene and Stuart Mentzel. After her parents separated when she was 15, she started to work as a singer for bars and weddings. She continued this work even while she was attending college at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She started her theater career in 1995 and joined the audition for the rock musical Rent.
After she was cast on the said production, she eventually earned her first album which was called Still I Can’t Be Still under the Hollywood Records. Later on, she appeared on various films and TV series, including the popular musical comedy TV series Glee where she played as Shelby Corcoran.
In 1995, Idina met the actor Taye Diggs during the production of Rent. Little did she know that Taye was her future husband. They eventually dated and got married on January 11, 2003. Few years later, they were blessed with a son named Walker Nathaniel Diggs who was born on September 2, 2009. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t work as they decided to separate in 2013.
